Pullman Bangkok King Power Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand

There's just so many wonderful things that we can say about Pullman Bangkok King Power Hotel in Bangkok Thailand. We loved our room as it was well decorated for our taste. Nothing too fancy yet sophisticated and the bed was amazing. The bathroom was superb! There is a free Tuk Tuk service to the nearest BTS (Train) station and vice-versa. You have a Duty-Free shop just at the back of the Hotel (a two-minute walk). The pool was excellent too. Anyway, I'll let the photos talk for themselves. Things to know if visiting Bangkok

Airport to Hotel – Upon exiting the Baggage claim, you’ll see people near the exits trying to get you a taxi to Bangkok itself. The trip from the airport to Bangkok itself would cost you between 350-400 Baht including the 25 Baht toll fee and dependent on how far you are from the airport and traffic.  Be sure to have exchanged some Baht after passing the Immigration or after claiming your luggage! You don’t have to exchange that much as rates are lower. Just be sure to have enough for the taxi fare and some for tips.

Tuk Tuks and metered Taxis – The tuk tuk is a motorcycle drawn vehicle, used as a public utility vehicle much like our very own ‘tricycle’. Riding the Tuk- tuk is probably a one-off thing for tourists. You ride it for the experience. Tuk Tuks’ usually charge higher than a taxi unless you really know how to haggle. In our experience, you’re better off paying an air-conditioned metered taxi than riding the open Tuk tuk in the humidity and smoke-filled streets of Bangkok. In both cases though, you’ll be offered a side trip to a massage or a museum. Also, some taxis have faster meters than others. Once we rode a taxi to Pratunam, without traffic, for 50 Baht. With another taxi, we paid 70 Baht.

Patpong - I’m not sure what is really there to see in Patpong aside from the “Ping Pong Show” – which we didn’t watch! This place is a rip-off when it comes to shopping. A fake LV bag would be priced at 3600 Baht but can be haggled to about 800 Baht; that is if you know how to really, really haggle. This is the same for anything that they sell there. What is annoying is that even if they know that you know the actual prices, they’d still mark it up to almost 5 times its actual value. With regards to the “shows”, brokers would be in your face selling the shows. I personally wasn’t interested especially that from internet forums, you usually get scammed into paying more once inside. Plus the thought of the “show” itself wasn’t to enticing for either one of us. More on this later.

Shopping – Bangkok is really a shopping haven for those on a budget. Well, you also have the expensive brands available in Siam Paragon and other malls but if you’re really into “Bangkok Shopping”, the best place to go is in Pratunam. Leave your hotel at 8:30 when traffic is usually light. By the time you get there, you can grab some street food and wait till the shops open at 9. The place is HUGE and there were so many areas that you can go to but the best bargains (Tshirts, blouses, pants) can be had for much cheaper than buying them in MBK. A top in MBK would cost you around 230-300 Baht (with haggling), while 3 pieces of tops would cost you 110-160 Baht in Pratunam. Well, the catch is, you have to buy 3 items from the same shop to get the “wholesale” price.  Forget MBK. We spent our last morning in Bangkok frantically buying stuff from Pratunam.

Of Babies, Husbands and Being SIngle

Here's a conversation between Xianelle and her her Auntie/Tita Tin (My sister, 33 years old).

Xianelle: Tita, how come you don't have a baby?
Tita Tin: I don't have a husband yet
Xianelle: How come you don't have a husband?
Tita Tin: I don't know...
Xianelle: Maybe beacause you look like a teenager.

Tita Tin's personal Note: Love na love ko talaga ang batang 'to.. hehehe! (I really love this kid!)

Sunday Toy Donation

Every year when we come home, we always make it a point to donate some money to a charity. The past few years, we've been donating to a charity whose purpose is to support the elderly who have been abandoned by their families. This year, we were told by my mom that they have donated some toys to a village near our area who were composed of "Aetas" or part of the indigenous tribe, who were displaced from their homes when Mt. Pinatubo erupted. So while still in Qatar, we tried to explain to xiane that we'd be giving away some of her old and unused toys and also some of the toys that she's been getting from Mcdonalds or from parties that she attends. Xianelle helped her mom in picking up toys that she was willing to let go and was very giving by not opening the toys from her Kiddie Meals so she could add them to her donations. By the time we got back to the Philippines, she was able to fill half of a big box.

This sunday, after going to the park, we prepared some candies in bags so we could give them away with Xiane's toys. We drove to the Aeta Village and told on of the village representatives to call children so we could hand out some toys and candies to them. In less than 2 minutes, kids from everywhere were running towards our car. We opened the back of the car and asked them to line up. It was really hot but Xiane, Mavis and my Sis were so busy handing toys out that it wasn't really a concern. It was chaotic at first but ended without any problems.

We're hoping to come back before our vacation ends and buy some slippers, pencils and papers for the kids. It was also very heartwarming to see Xiane excited about giving away her toys knowing that she would make somebody else happy with her gift. I'm sure she'd be able to save more toys for next year.

Bangkok Getaway

It’s been years since my husband and I spent some time alone together. Our last trip was in October 2001, when we went to Hong Kong for our honeymoon. But since we had our daughter in 2003, having some ‘alone time’ together has been quite difficult especially because having to live abroad meant that we didn’t have an extra hand to look after our daughter.  We’d had trips and outings but always with Xianelle and the entire family.

Almost 8 years later, we thought it was time we had another trip just the two of us.  After all Xianelle is already 6 years old.  So we did, Tian came home one day telling me about the trip to Bangkok that he wanted us to have.  But of course we had to consult it first with my in-laws who can’t be any happier about the thought of baby-sitting her.

Tian booked us a plane to Bangkok where we would stay for 4 nights and 5 days (July 21-25).  It was something that I had looked forward to for months and having done a trip alone with my husband after so many years was definitely worth the wait.
