Renewing Rent Lease 2008

I’ve posted about the new law stating that landlords can’t increase rent for the next 2 years. This is good for us expats as it means that rents won’t skyrocket to unbelievable amounts. Well and good if implemented. As I’ve found out, when renewing our house lease, the new law doesn’t necessarily mean that it would be followed by landlords/companies.

I called Mr. H the other day to say that we plan to continue renting the flat for another year. I asked him if I need to prepare the cheques for the same amount as last years. He told me that they are going to increase the rent to QR6000! I told him that this is not in line with the law but was given so many reasons. First, I was told that I was new in the building so they can increase the rent. I told them I was one of the first tenants of the building. I even told them that I got an unfurnished apartment and the family below us is paying QR6000 for a fully furnished apartment. Still no go.

At the end of discussion, I just agreed to the QR500 increase. I’ve been thinking that I may go to the appointed Government department and fight it out with them but then I don’t think it is worth my time. The current rate for a 2 bedroom apartment is QR7500 so I’m still quite lucky in a sense. However, they only gave me a years’ contract. Definitely, I would contest if they would raise the rent next year.
