Update: Lulu Hypermarket Trying to Detain My Wife

Mavis is at the Mall right now trying to cool off. As I was on the phone with the police, she called me up and told me she was already outside of Lulu, leaving the stuff that she was supposed to buy, and the price list. They were insisting that she should go to the Lulu office even though she already gave up the list. She was even thought to be a spy for the other grocery shops but the hell, if one wants to be a spy, one would be more discreet in writing down prices. If other shops would really want to get their prices, they could do so without much fuss by sending out real spies.

More on this later...

Lulu Hypermarket Trying to Detain My Wife!

I sent my wife off to do our usual yearly Cost of Living list as she was to do her groceries in Lulu Hypermarket (D Ring Road). I printed out a copy of last year’s Cost of Living in Qatar list to make it easier to list the prices down. Apparently, she is now being told that one can not list down prices of commodities and it is not allowed by the shop. She did stop but it seems it isn't over yet.

So at the moment, she called me up and was telling me that the security guys were trying to get hold of the list that we have and they’re even calling the head of security. I told her to ask for the manager as I don’t think this is right at all. They’re even trying to detain her and not let her leave the hypermarket!!! I told her to ask for help so that other people would take notice of what they're doing. I can hear her from the phone as she didn't end the call. They're trying to get her bag and even her ID! This is harassment.

It’s ok for you to ban cameras but to stop people from getting prices of stuff from the grocery? That’s way too absurd. So as a consumer and someone buying items from the grocery store, you can’t even get prices off their items? What the  **** is going on?  Don’t we have any consumer rights  at all in Doha?

---------
after 10 minutes...
I already called the police as the line was cut off hoping that they could go to Lulu and check on my wife if she is being detained illegally. I got a call from her as I was about to tell the police to go there.

Xiane's First Report Card

"Xianelle's general knowledge, reading and vocabulary is excellent. She is kind and thoughtful and is an asset to the class. She is a joy to teach."

Xianelle received her first report card yesterday. Mavis didn't open it as she was intending to open it when we reach home after picking me up from the office. But as soon as I learned that she already had the report card, I couldn't help myself but open it in the car (while still parked of course). I think any parent would be excited to know how your kid is doing in school right? So here is Xianelle's Report card.

Icebergs

I got this very nice forwarded message tonight and I just thought it is worth sharing.

The Titanic received five iceberg warnings just before it went down. When the sixth message came during the wee hours of the morning: "Lookout for icebergs," the operator wired back "Shut-up! I'm busy!" Thirty minutes later the great 'unsinkable' vessel was sinking fast.
What happened? They forgot the truth about icebergs. What they saw above the water couldn't have sunk the great ship. But unfortunately most of an iceberg is below the water. Do you know what? That iceberg represents your life! The 10% above the water is your reputation; the 90% below is your character. And it's what's below the surface that sinks your ship.

What is character? (a) Self-discipline - the ability to do what's right, even when you don't feel like it. (b) Core values - principles you live by in spite of the pressures around you. (c) Sense of identity - a self-image based on who God, not others, says you are. (d) Emotional security - the capacity to be emotionally stable and consistent. Your life's greatest impact doesn't come from what you own, but from what you are. Jesus said, "Each tree is recognised by its own fruit... The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart" (Luke 6:44-45 NIV).

Whatever's happening today on the outside of your life comes from what's happening on the inside. God puts "being" before "doing." He prioritises taking care of the inside (your heart) because that will determine what takes place on the outside (your behaviour). Think about it!

Eggs, LPG, Flour, etc. Shortage in Doha?

I thought we were the only ones who have experienced LPG shortage here in Doha.  I don't know if it's appropriate to call it a "shortage" but what would you call it if an item or product is no where to be found when you it the most?  A few weeks ago, we tried calling every gas dealer that we could find in the Q-tel directory online after we've called the dealers here in Matar Qadeem.  Somehow, it gives you a sense of panic when the each one of them tells you that there is no LPG available and it's not available in entire Doha.  It's unbelievable but it happened.

Now, a fellow blogger has just posted that they experienced the same fate just last weekend and didn't have LPG for more than a day.  I thought, our experience was just due to the holidays and all but when you hear others having experienced the same, it makes you really wonder why.  How come a country that thrives on the oil industry has a shortage of LPG?  Hmm... what could be the problem?

It wasn't so long ago when we all had to deal with the lack of eggs in the supermarkets.  I remember the eggs selling for as much as 27 riyals per tray when it should only be around 15 riyals.  Now the shelves are full of trays of eggs again.  They either come from India or Brazil, with each tray selling from 15-20 riyals depending on where you buy them.  We get ours from Family Food Center for only 15 riyals.

I've also read in one blog that even flour has been missing on the shelves lately.  So I guess I would have to agree with that fellow blogger when she said, "what's next?"  This lack of different items from the supermarkets and the LPG could be attributed to Qatar's growing population mainly from the influx of expatriates and most importantly to the fact that Qatar doesn't have any know industries other than petroleum and natural gas.  Everything is just imported, from salt, sugar, what have you.  I guess it's high time the government encourage investors to put up other industries here in Qatar.  Look at Saudi, UAE and other neighboring gulf countries.  It would definitely benefit the country if it has it's own industries.  At least then, it doens't have to rely on others so much for basic commodities.  Having said this, now I don't even know if "Qatar Pafki" (my favorite local cheese curls) is indeed from Qatar.  Oh well, I checked the label and it does say "Made in Qatar".  So there you go, at least it is one sure thing that is proudly Qatar-made.
