Doha Montessori and British School held its Sports Day for the KG-Year 2 classes on December 13.  It was a two and a half hour non-competitive sports event where children from the said classes participated in different sports activities.  My daughter Xianelle almost didn’t attend the Sports day.  She had been having fever for 3 consecutive nights and although she managed to go to school the next day, we thought it best for her to miss the Sports day so she could rest.  We figured going to school on that day would only make her sicker since she would have to engage in physical activities.

So we didn’t wake her up. Tian prepared for work and I on the other hand was already prepared to spend the rest of the day with Xiane at home.  But when she woke up and we told her that she won’t be going to school, she got disappointed.  Xiane told us that she really wanted to go since her teacher told everyone in class that it’s something that’s not going to happen again, well at least not for the rest of the school year.  Seeing her gusto to go to school, we gave in to her request.  So there I was in a hurry to prepare her and all her needs.  We came to school at around 7:45. When we found her class, her friend Jaq was already calling out her name.  Her class was just about to start with the “five strides event”.  It was funny watching the kids.  Some were making it look like a piece of cake while others had a harder time.  I was taking photos along with the other parents who were also watching.

The class took a water break after everybody has had their turns twice or thrice.  Then we watched the “short running races”.  Here, the class was divided into 3 teams. Xiane belonged to the blue team.  Xiane was so funny when she didn’t hear her teacher say “ready steady go!”  As a result she had a pretty late start in the race.  Then next was the “standing long jump”.  Little as they were, they really gave it their best.  The children had fun playing the “target throw-bean bag”.  In this activity, the children had to throw a bean bag to a ring with the corresponding color.  While most of the sports activities had to do with balance, this one is all about hand and eye coordination and the ability to calculate distance.  Last on the list was the “2 hand push with big ball”.  The objective was for each child to throw a big ball as far as they could.   Since Xiane came late she missed out on the tennis racquet balance and the obstacle course.  Nevertheless, I was more than glad that she was still able to join most of the activities.

Xiane was supposed to stay in class after the sports activities but her teacher was considerate enough to let me bring her home so that she could spend the rest of the morning off.  I was happy to be able to watch her yesterday but I know that no one could be happier than her for being able to join the fun and for having experienced such an event.  Until the next Sports Day…

UPDATE: On the16th of December, everyone who participated in the Sports Day got a Certificate of Participation!
