Sony Ericcson WTA Championship in Doha

Great news for all Tennis fans! Qatar just won the bid to host the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour's season-ending championships for a three-year period from 2008. Yup. Just the top 8 women at the end of the season, battling it our for the US$4.45 million. Last year, the pot was US$3million and it would be bumped to 4.5 next year. The champion would be taking in US$1.485 million!

With this, Qatar would be hosting 3 international tennis events in a year; the Qatar ExxonMobil Open, the Qatar Total Open and the Sony Ericsson WTA Championships. They also laid out plans to renovate the existing Khalifa International Tennis Complex. They’re going to make the Center Court bigger to accommodate more viewers as well as upgrade the other courts. It is due for expansion as people in Doha are getting more and more acquainted with tennis over the years.
