Xbox 360, PS3, PSP or DS

A guy from another forum was  planning to buy a console for his kids and wanted some advice. Here's my response:

Get a DS Lite!

I have a Wii, an Xbox and 2 DS Lites. I'm no fanboy of any console as I also owned the PS1, which to me, spearheaded the next gen console gaming right after the NES.

Anyway, for me, it's not about the computing power of the console which makes me want to buy it. It's basically for the games, the fun and entertainment it brings you. Forget about the blu-ray of PS3 or the HD add-on of Xbox 360 as they are both crap. Compare them to stand alone (google it) players and they suck big time in terms of output. It's all about games. Definitely, PS3 (as well as the PSP) has more in store in terms of games (mature games) vs. the Xbox 360 as you can really count the good games lined up for the 360. The Wii is a league of its own as it caters more to kids and adults who wants to enjoy playing with friends. There are more party games, cutesy graphics, and Mario, Wario, Donkey and Sonic. Nothing can beat it in that aspect.

As a suggestion, get a DS Lite. If you have 2 kids, get 2 of them so they can play with each other. Just bought mine a week ago and wifey and I are addicted to it (playing Elite Beat Agents, Cooking Mama,Mario Kart, Brain Age, New Super Mario, Nintendogs, etc...). I'm sure your kids would enjoy it too. The good thing about it is that you can buy a special gamecard and place all the DS games you want along with a 1 GB card and play them without buying another QR130-225 game. Great for kids and adults. Lots of fun, great brain and puzzle games too.

Almost Ready for Vacation

I'm raring to go on vacation! Work at the start of the year has been really busy especially that my trainee had to go on maternity leave for 3 months. Our vacation was supposed to have started 1st week of March but had to  make a leave amendment due to my trainee going on leave. Now, our planned leave  is on the 1st week of May. We're going to Hong Kong (for the 3rd time) and we'd be meeting my parents and sisters there. I promised my mom about 6 years ago that I would take them there so this is actually  a fulfillment of the promise and more since I'm taking my sisters too. I actually wanted to go to Singapore or somewhere else as I've been to Hong Kong twice already. Once when I was in Grade 6 and my dad won a lottery or something. We spent our Christmas in Hongkong, spending a week there. Then, Mavis and I went there about 4 years ago, spending about 5 days there. What's making us go there again this time? Hong Kong Disneyland. My mom's childhood dream was to go to Disneyland and since Hong Kong Disneyland opened up about 2 years ago, this is the opportunity for her to go there. I know that it's not quite as big as the other Disneylands out there but it's the most convinient one for us as the 3 of us (Mavis, Xiane and I) would just to a stopover and then have my parents come in from the Philippines.

I've already made arrangement for almost everything; hotels, park tickets, transportation from airport to hotel, tickets for those in the PHilippines, etc. The 3 of us would be arriving 2 days earlier than the party from the Philippines just so we'd have time to recover from jetlag as it's almost a 8 hour trip from Qatar to Hong Kong. Also, my vacation starts on Friday so I'd rather spend time there than in Qatar. My parents would be arriving on Sunday. We'd be spending 3 nights in Kowloon (aside from the 2 days that MAvis, Xiane and I are already spending there) and 2 night in Disney Hollywood Hotel. I got some great discounts from Disneyland as they had some promotions at the start of the year wherein if I buy 4 annual pass tickets, I'd be getting a night's hotel stay for free. Plus, you get about 35% off room rates if you're an annual pass member and some food discounts too.

I'm looking forward for this vacation as I think we all deserve it. I'm sure my parents would enjoy it just because all of us would be there. I'm sure Xiane would enjoy it since she'll get to see Disney characters too. Personally, I've always enjoyed going to Hong Kong and I'd go there again after this if given the chance.

I've Got a Job

I am so glad to be pounding the keyboard again after one whole week. I actually missed blogging. I had so many things to write about, so many thoughts in my mind but didn't get the chance to do so. Well let's just say that a recent development has just unfolded, I now have a job as a teacher at the same nursery where Xianelle goes to. Yup, after six long years since I got married, I finally got the opportunity to work (again). It is just a 3-week teaching stint, after which I may or may not decide to continue to work, whether as a teacher or in another field.

The job was offered to me since they needed an extra hand in the nursery. There were working parents who needed a place for their 4-6 year old children to stay while their "big schools' are on a break. The same children also came from the same nursery when they were just pre-schoolers, so it was quite difficult for the administrator to say no. On Thursday last week, the administrator approached me and asked if I could take the job. She needed my answer by 8am that same day so I immediately called my husband. Tian readily agreed, he was actually glad for me, especially that I will be working in the same place where our daughter is. In short, I accepted the offer and on the weekend, I found myself surfing the net for some activities appropriate for the age group that I will be handling. Lucky enough, I was able to find some good ones. Saturday, the eve of my teaching debut, I was busy preparing the activities for the chilldren, cooking food for our lunch the next day and packing food for all three of us.

Sunday was my first day at work. For someone who's spending her first day on the job, I would have to say that I wasn't nervous at all. Probably, having my own daughter has prepared me for it. At the back of my mind, I knew that doing this job would be just like being a mom to Xianelle, only on a larger scale. Perhaps my frequent visits to the nursery gives me a great degree of familiarity with the staff, the place and even with most of the children there, although my class would consist of children coming from other schools.  On the first day, only two of my pupils came, so they had to join another class. It was actually a good way to start since I got the chance to see their routine first hand. I spent the day assisting in that class. Having said that, it was easier for me the next day.

Meeting with my pupils for the first time and putting into practice what I've learned the day before was a bit tough. I had older pupils (4 to almost 8 year olds). Children will be children even if they are a bit older. They still are playful and to some degree still naughty and pesky. But of course, I had to assert my authority and I was able to pull it off. From then on, everyday, I would give them  activities like coloring and other art work. I confess that some of the activities may be a little easy for them. Then we'd have our lesson. They enjoyed it when we did the flash cards. I had them guess the flash card by describing the item for them. All-in-all it was fun working at the nursery although I must say, it is really tiring. I know it's cliche but having experienced it myself, I am proud to say being a teacher is really one of the noblest and the hardest jobs in the whole world, same with being a mother. I have always had high respect for teachers but not as much as I do now. Kudos to all the educators in the world! As for me, I have yet 2 weeks to be a teacher and a choice whether I'd continue to be one. Until then...
