Watching Death

Saddam Hussein, was tried by the Iraqi Court. His death sentence appeal was denied and just a few days later, the sentence was carried as it was ruled that it should be done within 30 days. Thus, on the 30th of December 2006, at the start of Eid and before the year ended, the world witnessed the infamous dictator's demise via hanging. I am sure that everyone, including I and my husband was taken aback by this event. Tian just happened to switch channels to CNN when we realized that the hanging had already taken place at 6am Iraq time on Saturday. I felt bad, as I watched the video footage being shown on tv. It was a morbid feeling, especially as the rope was placed around Saddam's neck. I know the man had done so many terrible crimes against humanity, especially against his people but I couldn't get myself to say that he deserved to die. I couldn't justify the reasons for putting someone to death intentionally for the horrible things that he had done. Moreso, it didn't give any relief knowing that the world got rid of one abomination. I actually felt pity for the man, for all the wrong that he had done. I also resent the fact that the sentence was carried out too soon, as if some force actually tried to hasten things from happening, thus not giving Saddam enough time to reflect on his life, on the things that he had done. I don't know how is it to be like in the shoes of the Iraqis and everyone Saddam had committed crime against but I do know that watching someone face death, wasn't a good sight to see.
