My Driving Master
Today is going to be my 6th day at the driving school. It is official, I have number 96 for my driving instructor or shall I say my “master” (much like a Jedi master huh!), as what they are actually called in the driving school. Now, I am officially a “Padawan” myself. We’ve been through the “L-Parking” already. You drive up an inclined plane coming from the left side, and then you stop at the middle and use your hand break. Next you release the hand break and continue your way up. This time you have to balance the clutch and the gas in order for you not to move backwards. Once you’re at the end, you then back up going to the right. He has also taught me the technique for the “pocket parking”. Here, you are supposed to make a parallel parking on a very limited space surrounded by metal poles. At first I didn’t understand what he meant by “look at little window, should be little pole.” Then after 2 tries I finally got what he meant, he was telling me to watch out for the last pole and make sure that I see very little of it through the small window at the right side. Once in that position, I must make a full right reverse, with which I am to watch out for my left back tire and make sure that it touches a certain line. Then, I make a full left reverse, backing up really slowly, lest I knock off one of the poles. This time I have to check that the front left tire is on a line. Then, I make a full right forward very carefully. My master told me that he’ll be asking me to drive along the roundabouts today. It makes me both excited and nervous knowing that there are way too many roundabouts in Doha. Everything’s going well with my driving lessons. My only complaint is having painful hands, especially the right hand from exerting too much effort on the steering wheel. My master’s car is a bit old but I found out that none of the cars that they use, even the new ones are power-steering. That’s why after every session my right hand really gets strained. I hope that I’ll pass the driving test as soon as the lessons are over so I won’t have to go back to that nasty steering wheel.
