Driving School in Qatar: 1st day

It was my first day at the driving school. Having enrolled in the half course, I’d be given 12 days, an hour each day to prepare myself for the actual series of driving tests. I got there ten minutes before 5pm, the schedule that I chose. I presented my card to one of the staff there, after which he signed it as confirmation that I came for my lessons. Then I was told to look for car no. 40, Sudan. So I went looking for it in the compound, where I found about 20 or more cars mostly parked. I headed to a car that had number 40 on it but was told by one of the instructors that it wasn’t the car that I was looking for. The guy helped me looked for the driver or instructor and found out that he was still attending to another student. So I had to go back to the office and was told to look for car no. 22. After having wasted about 15 minutes of my precious time, I finally got to number 22. It was then I realized that the number is not actually the car’s but of the driver/ instructor. So my instructor for today is number 22 but his car is number 62.

My instructor who’s from Sri Lanka took the driver’s seat. Then he drove along a path slowly. He was telling me something about shifting from first gear to second. After several rounds of driving along that path which is no more than 1 kilometer, he finally let me take the seat. I don’t know if this was a standard procedure or he just let me because I have the blue card, which by the way meant that I’m only taking the half course and which also meant that I somehow, know how to drive. So there I was, driving the same path over and over again. But I guess, my instructor got bored himself and told me to drive outside the compound. I started driving on the back streets of the driving school which was far better than just going round and round. After about 15-20 minutes we went back to the driving school grounds and called it a day. The instructor told me that it is ok if he’d be my instructor for the entire course but I’m having second thoughts. Not that I have any qualms about him, it’s just that his car is quite old compared to the cars that the other drivers have. I couldn’t even adjust the left side mirror. When I asked him why is that so, he said that only Qatari and Sudanese drivers get the newer ones. Unfair huh, but that’s how it is. So I’m thinking if I should pursue the Sudanese number 40 that was previously assigned to me. On second thought, I’m also thinking that getting used to an old car might work to my advantage, thinking that the car that I’ll be using during the driving tests will be as old or even older. Now, I’m torn! Well let see what happens. Today, I just felt that I should have gotten more out of my driving lessons but maybe it is too early to complain, after all it’s just my first day. I have to pass the driving test and that’s all that really matters.

hi, could u tell me how much are driving lessons? How many theory test do I need to take? I found myself a job in Doha and moving there before end of year. I need to learn how to drive. Been told that public transport there is almost non-existent and I cant rely too much on the taxis. I have some driving lessons here in Singapore but did not pass the test (extremely tough to pass here!) Have not been behind the wheels for a few years now. I still remember the basics of driving though.... thanks Suwarni

Hi Suwarni! It's nice that you came across our site. anyway, since you don't have a license yet, you will have to enroll in a full driving course which costs QR1800 with 25 training days. I am not aware though as to how many training days one should have finished before he could take the test. i think the master (instructor) will decide whether you're ready to take it. You have to pay QR50 to register for the test. The test has 4 parts, an oral test for the road and traffic signs, then the L-parking, pocket parking, and the actual road test. Take note that each test part is a pre-requisite for the next, that is why you need to pass the first before you could proceed to the next. But after having passed one part, you're not made to do it again. Right now I am stuck with the pocket parking, that's why i couldn't have the road test. I am hoping to finally pass everything on my next and last chance. If not, I'll be forced to take the full course and take the test again. Whatever happens, you'll know it here. Wish me luck and the best of luck too on your plans of moving here.

Hi Mavis, I chanced upon your blog and am very interested in the topics being shared. The thing is, I be moving to Doha in this Nov bcos I be joing Qatar Airways as an air stewardess. I would like to ask if it's possible for me to take up the driving license there as you understand my jobscope requires to travel here and there. So, I am wondering if it's al right if I were to take the license? I do have my basic theory taken in Spore. Just that but I can drive my dad auto car but well, you know it's illegal...the only thing is I need a legal license. Can you advise me on this Mavis? I would really appreciate it. You can reach me at glitzerlubon@gmail.com Hope to hear from you soon. Till then, you take care.

Hi! 3 things you can do to get your driver's license here in Qatar. First, get a license in Singapore, have it validated here in Qatar, and take an exam right away. Otherwise, to boost your confidence and upping your chances of passing the driving test, I suggest you take a 12 day course after you get your Singapore license validated, then do your test. Lastly, if you don't want to get a license in Singapore, you can enroll for a full course (25 days) without needing a Singapore License then take the test. Goodluck!

I am looking for the list of Driving Schools in Doha, Qatar for our company drivers.

Hi Mavis, I was hoping if you could help me out with some information. I will be moving to doha by the end of the year and would like to get a driving licence.I do have an american driving licence. Am I required to take all the tests or only the road test ? As I am on vacation now in doha , I was looking towards obtaining a licence in the next three weeks , do you think its possible. Moreover I am familiar with automatic and would need classes for manual driving. I heard the waiting period is very long, is that true ? Hope you can help me out. Thank you.

Zeenat, since you have a US license, I think that this is already good enough to just get a Qatar Driver's License without undergoing any tests. You better go to the Police stations to inquire but I'm 90% sure that you don't need to take the test anymore. If you do need to take the test and the driving lessons, waiting time is really long - at least a month.

Hello Mavis ! this post has been quite interesting to me, as I might move to Qatar for work, and I am considering taking a driving license there. I understood that a full course is 25 days : does that mean 25*1 hour ? something else ? Then, how difficult is it getting the license ? close to american standards, european standards ? Thanks a lot for your answers. Marek.
